To truly appreciate Chanderi, one must wake up to its crisp air. The Chanderi Eco Retreat serves as the newest chapter in the region’s storied history, reviving a destination that has been a cultural crossroads since the 11th century. Historically a hub for trade and a favorite of medieval royalty, Chanderi’s heritage is now being preserved through this sustainable tourism initiative.
The Fabindia team was fortunate enough to experience this firsthand. Here is a look behind the scenes of a day dedicated to the gossamer-fine silk and cotton that has defined Chanderi for centuries.
At the Heart of the Dialogue

The energy was palpable from the start. Mr. William Bissell took his place as a Guest of Honour on the dais, a testament to Fabindia’s decades-long commitment to the weaver community.

The centerpiece of the evening was a high-level roundtable discussion focused on the intersection of heritage and commerce. One of the most insightful moments was when the dialogue delved into the “Chanderi Model” of development, exploring how digital literacy for weavers and global supply chain integration can protect the GI (Geographical Indication) status of the fabric. It was a powerful reminder that for heritage to survive, it requires both political will and sustainable retail pathways.
From Loom to Life: A Runway Spectacle
The highlight of the inauguration was undoubtedly the fashion show, where the heritage of the loom met the vision of the modern designer. Fabindia had the distinct honor of opening the show, unveiling a curated collection of 10 garments that pushed the boundaries of traditional attire.
As the models moved, the sheer, metallic sheen of the silk-cotton blend caught the spotlight, showcasing the signature butis (motifs) and zari borders that have made the fabric famous. The collection transitioned from classic saris to contemporary silhouettes like layered overlays and innovative draping styles, demonstrating the fabric’s incredible versatility. It served as a visual bridge between the ancient looms of Madhya Pradesh and the modern, global wardrobes of today.

Living Amidst the Heritage: The Tent City Experience

The team stayed at the newly unveiled “Tent City”, a luxurious eco-conscious settlement that manages to feel both rustic and refined. Nestled against the backdrop of the rugged landscape, the tents provided a serene escape.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, the retreat transformed for the Cultural Night. Under a canopy of stars, local folk musicians and Sufi singers took center stage. The air was thick with their melodies, proving that the heritage of this region isn’t just woven into its fabric; it is sung in its songs. Observing the performers, it became clear that the “Eco Retreat” is not just about a room to stay in; it is an immersive leap into the soul of Madhya Pradesh.
